Stargazing Near Providence Canyon: The 2026 Dark Sky Calendar

In 2016 a team of researchers published a world atlas of artificial night sky brightness in the journal Science Advances. One finding stood out: nearly 80 percent of North Americans cannot see the Milky Way from where they live. It has not gone anywhere. It is up there every clear night, washed out by the glow of the towns and cities beneath it, and most of the people you know have never once seen it.

Clay Cosmos sits 500 feet from Providence Canyon State Park, in a county of 4,674 people, under a sky that rates a Class 3 on the Bortle scale. What follows is what that rating means, when the Milky Way is out, and which nights between now and December are worth booking for it.

What a Class 3 sky means

The Bortle scale runs from one to nine. One is the best sky on Earth, the kind found in remote deserts; nine is the center of a large city. A three is what astronomers call a rural sky: the Milky Way shows its structure, the brighter and darker bands visible along its length, and light pollution appears only as a faint glow low on the horizon toward the nearest towns.

We say "Class 3" and nothing grander, because the number was measured and the adjectives were not.

The park closes at six. The sky doesn't.

From September 15 through April 14, Providence Canyon State Park is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., which means that for seven months of the year the gate closes before full dark. The park runs astronomy programs on certain nights, and its events page lists the dates. On every other night, the closest place to keep watching is under a mile down Canyon Road.

When the Milky Way is out

The bright center of the Milky Way is visible from Lumpkin from late winter, when it rises before dawn, through October, when it is already up shortly after dark. In September and October it stands in the southwest after dusk and sets a little earlier each week. By the end of October it is gone until late winter. If you want to see it in 2026, you have about eight weeks.

The 2026 dark sky calendar

The moon decides how good a night will be. A full moon washes out the Milky Way and most of the fainter stars with it, so if the sky is the reason for the trip, book the weekend closest to a new moon. Four remain this year.

• New moon Thursday, September 10. Best nights: Friday and Saturday, September 11 and 12, with the Milky Way in the southwest after dark.
• New moon Saturday, October 10. Best nights: Friday and Saturday, October 9 and 10, the last good look at the Milky Way until late winter.
• New moon Monday, November 9. Best nights: Friday and Saturday, November 6 and 7.
• New moon Tuesday, December 8. Best nights: December 11 through 13. The Geminid meteor shower peaks on the night of the 13th, five days after the new moon, with the crescent setting early in the evening. The Geminids are the strongest meteor shower of the year, and in 2026 the moon will not interfere.

Nights to avoid: the full moons of September 26 and October 25.

How to see more

Your eyes need about twenty minutes in the dark to adjust, and a single look at a phone screen resets them. Turn off the porch light, put the phone away, and wait. A red flashlight is worth bringing, because red light does not undo the adjustment. If you are in a wagon, let the fire burn down first. Check the forecast for cloud cover as well as rain, and bring a blanket even in September, because you will stay out longer than you planned.
